Legends  concerning extraterrestrial contact with George Washingon and/or supernatural spiritual contact all pointing to him as being protected and guarded for a greater purpose

This is a fascinating topic because it sits at the intersection of American history, religion, folklore, and modern UFO speculation. After looking into the available historical sources, here’s what appears to be the strongest evidence—and where the evidence becomes legend rather than documented history.

1. The famous “Washington’s Vision” at Valley Forge

The best-known story is that while encamped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778, George Washington experienced a supernatural visitation.

The visitor is described as:

A radiant woman or angelic being
Surrounded by brilliant light
Showing Washington visions of America’s future
Predicting three great trials for the nation

The vision allegedly showed:

The American Revolution
The Civil War
A future worldwide conflict involving America

The being supposedly concluded:

“Son of the Republic… while the stars remain… the Union shall endure.”

Many Christian writers interpret this as divine protection over America.

2. Was this account written during Washington’s lifetime?

Here is where things become much less certain.

Modern historians have found:

There is no mention of this vision in Washington’s diaries.
It appears nowhere in his letters.
None of his officers recorded it.
It was not published until the Civil War era, decades after Washington’s death.

The story was attributed to an elderly Revolutionary War veteran named Anthony Sherman.

However, researchers discovered major problems:

Sherman apparently was not at Valley Forge during the relevant period.
The story appears to have been written by journalist Charles W. Alexander using the pseudonym “Wesley Bradshaw.”
It first surfaced around 1861, just as the Civil War began.

Most academic historians therefore conclude that the story is almost certainly a patriotic Civil War-era legend rather than a documented event.

3. Was it an angel—or an extraterrestrial?

Originally the story never mentioned aliens.

The being was described more like:

an angel,
a heavenly messenger,
or a divine feminine figure.

The extraterrestrial interpretation emerged much later through books, television programs, and shows such as Ancient Aliens, which reinterpret many religious visions as possible encounters with non-human intelligences.

Supporters point to:

brilliant light
communication without ordinary speech
panoramic visions
prophecy
overwhelming presence

These resemble features reported in some modern UFO encounters.

Skeptics counter that these same characteristics also appear throughout biblical and mystical literature.

4. Washington and Divine Providence

This part is historically well documented.

Washington repeatedly wrote about:

Divine Providence
God’s protection
America’s special mission

Examples include statements such as:

“The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous…”

and

“The Great Author of every public and private good.”

His soldiers also frequently reported seeing him praying alone in the woods.

Those reports come from multiple independent witnesses and are considered historically credible.

Washington clearly believed:

God directed history.
America had a unique role.
His own survival was extraordinary.
5. The French and Indian War miracle

One event that is historically documented helped create Washington’s reputation for divine protection.

During the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755:

two horses were shot from beneath him,
four bullets pierced his coat,
he remained completely unharmed.

A Native American leader later reportedly said that his warriors deliberately tried to kill Washington but believed he was protected by the Great Spirit because none of their shots succeeded. While the exact wording comes from later recollections, Washington’s remarkable survival is well documented.

This incident greatly contributed to the idea that Washington had been preserved for a special purpose.

6. Esoteric and Masonic traditions

Washington was also a prominent member of Freemasonry.

Some modern writers suggest:

hidden spiritual knowledge,
angelic guardians,
ancient wisdom,
even extraterrestrial contact.

However, there is no documentary evidence from Washington himself supporting these claims.

Most of these ideas developed during the late 19th and 20th centuries.

7. Why do UFO researchers focus on Washington?

Researchers interested in non-human intelligence sometimes argue that pivotal historical leaders received guidance from advanced beings.

Washington is included because:

America became a dominant world power.
He repeatedly survived seemingly impossible dangers.
The Valley Forge legend resembles visionary experiences.
Later presidents, especially Dwight D. Eisenhower, have also become subjects of alleged UFO contact stories.

This creates a narrative that “important leaders are guided by non-human intelligence,” but the evidence for Washington specifically is largely speculative.

My assessment

If we separate the evidence by strength:

Strong historical evidence

Washington deeply believed in Divine Providence.
He survived extraordinary battlefield dangers.
Many contemporaries believed he was protected by God.
He often prayed privately and publicly attributed success to Providence.

Weak historical evidence

The Valley Forge angelic vision first appears many decades after the event.
No contemporary documentation exists.
Most historians regard it as a Civil War-era literary creation.

Highly speculative

Extraterrestrial contact.
Alien guidance.
Secret pacts or hidden technologies.
Government suppression of Washington’s encounters.

Those latter claims rely on reinterpretations rather than primary historical sources.
