Global Natural & Man-Made Disaster Watch

Friday, August 28, 2026 — current conditions and outlook through September 4

There is an unusually active mix of hazards tonight. The Himalayan Nepal/Tibet disaster is the most serious new natural event, while tropical cyclone activity is increasing in several ocean basins. There has also been notable earthquake activity in Asia and the Middle East. On the man-made side, Ukraine and Sudan remain major areas of infrastructure disruption.

🔴 1. Nepal–Tibet Himalayan catastrophe — highest concern

This is currently the natural disaster I would put at the top of the global watch list.

A catastrophic debris avalanche/flash flood struck Nepal near the Chinese border on August 26, apparently involving rapid slope failure and glacial material in Langtang National Park. USGS says the debris and flooding traveled nearly 100 km downstream.

The situation has continued to deteriorate. Reuters reports at least 552 deaths across Nepal and Tibet, nearly 1,000 people missing and more than 90,000 people requiring assistance. A lake created by the debris temporarily breached, interfering with rescue operations.

The UN is specifically warning about “cascading hazards” — additional flooding, unstable slopes, damaged infrastructure and disease risks from disrupted water and sanitation systems.

Coming week: 🔴 HIGH RISK. Additional rain could aggravate unstable terrain, landslides and river flooding. This event is still evolving rather than being finished.

🌎 2. Earthquakes — activity worth watching

A M5.0 earthquake struck China today, August 28, at approximately 10 km depth. Although M5.0 normally wouldn’t make my highest-priority list, GDACS issued an Orange alert because roughly 300,000 people were exposed to MMI VI shaking, giving it potential humanitarian significance.

Other recent events include:

  • Yemen — M6.0, August 27.
  • Off Honshu, Japan — M5.6, August 26.
  • Taiwan — M5.5, August 25.
  • Indonesia — M6.0, August 24.
  • Japan — M6.0, August 23.
  • Scotia Sea — M6.2, August 22.

And we should continue watching the aftershock region surrounding the much larger M7.4 Colombia earthquake earlier this month.

Coming week

🟠 Elevated seismic watch, particularly around the Pacific Ring of Fire.

But I want to emphasize something important: a cluster of earthquakes does not scientifically demonstrate that a larger global earthquake is imminent. Earthquake prediction remains extremely limited.

🌋 3. Volcano watch

You have particularly wanted Etna and Mount Pelée followed, so I checked both specifically.

Mount Etna — Sicily

Etna remains active, but the latest information is somewhat reassuring.

INGV reported a volcanic episode ending on August 26. Satellite monitoring describes thermal activity around the summit during the past week as moderate, while the latest measured thermal anomaly had fallen to a LOW level.

My watch level: 🟡 ELEVATED MONITORING — not an emergency.

Etna can change rapidly, so renewed tremor, increased thermal output or explosive summit activity would change the picture.

Mount Pelée — Martinique

Mount Pelée remains at:

🟡 YELLOW ALERT

The Martinique Volcano Observatory’s latest available weekly bulletin continues to classify Pelée at Yellow.

There is no evidence tonight of an imminent major eruption.

That distinction matters given the Cayce material we’ve discussed: Pelée deserves monitoring because of its unrest, but the scientific monitoring currently does not indicate the kind of catastrophic eruption envisioned in those predictions.

Kīlauea — Hawaii

Kīlauea’s summit eruption is presently paused following episode 54.

USGS has:

Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

USGS says another lava-fountaining episode is likely in the coming weeks if the normal reinflation pattern resumes, although current inflation has been unusually slow.

Great Sitkin — Alaska

Great Sitkin deserves attention as well.

The volcano remains:

WATCH / Aviation ORANGE

A slow lava eruption continues inside the summit crater.

🌀 4. Tropical storms — increasing activity

This could become one of the biggest stories of the coming week.

Atlantic — Tropical Storm Dolly

Tropical Storm Dolly is moving across the tropical Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center says that aside from Dolly, additional Atlantic tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next seven days.

Dolly nevertheless warrants watching for rain impacts around portions of the Caribbean.

The broader Atlantic season remains forecast to be below normal, partly because of El Niño.

Eastern/Central Pacific

This basin is considerably more interesting.

Tropical storms Karina and Lowell have formed, and both were expected to strengthen. Karina could generate dangerous surf and rip currents along southwest Mexico and Baja California even without a direct landfall.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center sees a greater than 60% probability of tropical cyclone development in part of the eastern Pacific during the Aug. 26–Sept. 1 period, with additional development possible during Sept. 2–8.

Pacific tropical activity: 🔴 HIGH WATCH

🌊 5. Flooding

Flooding is unusually widespread.

GDACS currently lists recent flood events involving Italy, China, India, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Guinea, France, Spain, the United States, Nigeria, Venezuela, Sudan and Japan, among others.

One developing situation involves Tibet and Nepal, where GDACS has an Orange flood alert associated with the Himalayan catastrophe.

There is also active flooding in Veracruz, Mexico, following heavy late-August rainfall.

Coming week: 🟠 Elevated global flood/landslide risk, especially across monsoon Asia.

🔥 6. Wildfires

Large fires continue in parts of Africa.

GDACS is tracking multiple substantial fires in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola, including one Congo event reported at approximately 82,880 hectares and an Angola event around 36,039 hectares.

Europe has also experienced significant fires this month, including Serbia and Belgium.

I would maintain an elevated wildfire watch through early September, particularly where extreme heat, drought and wind coincide.

⚠️ 7. Man-made disasters / conflicts

🇺🇦 Ukraine — very high concern

Russia has dramatically increased attacks on Ukrainian logistics and infrastructure.

Reuters reports Ukraine’s agricultural minister estimates that approximately 90% of food-logistics capacity operated by major retail chains has been destroyed, although he emphasized that this does not mean Ukraine is running out of food.

Russian drone attacks have struck warehouses, shopping facilities, postal/sorting centers and other civilian infrastructure. At least 16 people were reported killed across Ukraine during the latest day of attacks.

The outlook isn’t encouraging. Ukrainian officials expect fighting to continue through winter, with both Russia and Ukraine increasing attacks on logistics, ports and energy infrastructure.

Coming week: 🔴 VERY HIGH RISK

🇸🇩 Sudan

Sudan remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

Large portions of army-controlled Sudan are experiencing major electricity outages, worsened by damage to infrastructure and the continuing war between the army and Rapid Support Forces.

Reuters reports that the conflict is increasingly becoming a drone war, with critical civilian infrastructure affected. Famine remains present in parts of the country.

Coming week: 🔴 VERY HIGH humanitarian risk

🛢️ 8. Industrial/environmental incidents

NOAA is currently tracking several recent U.S. pollution/industrial incidents, including a crude-oil spill and in-situ burn near Pilottown, Louisiana, an intermittent oil sheen near the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, an unexplained sheen in Alaska and a mysterious gas release near Dauphin Island, Alabama.

None presently appears comparable in scale to a major international industrial catastrophe, but I will continue watching them.

☀️ 9. Space weather

I also checked this because solar/geomagnetic activity can become relevant to communications, satellites and electrical infrastructure.

I am not seeing evidence tonight of an extraordinary space-weather event comparable to a major Carrington-type threat. I would treat space weather as a monitoring item rather than a disaster warning.

My Global Risk Board: Aug. 29–Sept. 4

Threat Current level Coming-week concern
🇳🇵 Nepal/Tibet disaster 🔴 Severe Very High
🌀 Pacific cyclones 🟠 Rising High
🌊 Asian flooding/landslides 🔴 Severe locally High
🌎 Earthquakes 🟠 Active Elevated
🌋 Etna 🟡 Active/recent activity Watch closely
🌋 Mount Pelée 🟡 Yellow Watch
🌋 Kīlauea 🟡 Advisory Watch
🔥 Wildfires 🟠 Regional Elevated
🇺🇦 Ukraine 🔴 Severe Very High
🇸🇩 Sudan 🔴 Severe Very High
☀️ Space weather 🟢/🟡 Routine monitoring

What concerns me most for the coming week

#1 Nepal/Tibet. This is the immediate disaster to watch because officials explicitly warn that secondary flooding and cascading hazards remain possible.

#2 Tropical cyclones. The Eastern/Central Pacific environment looks favorable for additional development into early September.

#3 Earthquake/volcano belt. Japan, Indonesia and surrounding Pacific regions have been active. This warrants observation, but I would not interpret it as evidence that a global seismic event is imminent.

#4 Etna and Pelée. Etna has just gone through another period of activity, while Pelée remains Yellow. Neither currently provides scientific evidence of the simultaneous catastrophic eruption scenario associated with the Edgar Cayce prediction—but because these are the two volcanoes in that scenario, I agree they are worth keeping on our dedicated watch list.
